Genetic counseling at the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute

A growing number of individuals and families are concerned about their personal or family history of cancer. The genetic counselors at the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute can provide specialized risk assessments to help you make informed choices about genetic testing and prevention. These counselors are health care professionals with graduate training in medical genetics and counseling.

Genetic Counseling Services

The Virginia Piper Cancer Institute's genetic counseling services include:

  • collection of personal, maternal and paternal family histories
  • assessment of personal and family history for individualized risk calculations
  • recognition of cancer family syndromes
  • education about the development of cancer and genetics
  • selection of the appropriate genetic test or alternatives to testing (ensure informed decision-making)
  • interpretation of test results
  • discussion of management options
  • referrals for medical consultations about individualized care and clinical research trials if appropriate.

If you feel you are at high-risk for cancer or that genetic testing may be of benefit, ask your primary care doctor if a referral for genetic counseling is appropriate for you.
