How is liver cancer treated?

At the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute our physicians, surgeons, nurses and other health care professionals work together to provide comprehensive care of patients with liver tumors. This treatment team is anchored by a nurse coordinator who helps patients navigate the medical system. The entire team attends a working forum where patient management issues and complex cases are reviewed to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Surgery

Liver surgery is a sub-specialty of general surgery that requires additional training and a focused practice. Surgical removal (resection) of liver tumors is usually the primary goal of therapy. Many factors determine if resection is possible and an experienced liver surgeon is central to this evaluation. A liver surgeon will not only help determine if resection is an option, but will also evaluate other options such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA), chemoembolization, percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI) and selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT).

Gastroenterological interventions

Gastroenterologists are physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of digestive tract diseases. Many of our gastroenterologists further specialize in diseases of the liver, pancreas and bile ducts. Our gastroenterologists also perform advanced procedures such as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS).

Interventional radiology

Interventional radiologists assist in the diagnosis of patients with liver tumors through the use of the latest diagnostic X-ray equipment (CT, MRI, PET scans). These physicians also treat many patients with liver cancers through the use of RFA, PEI and SIRT.

Radiation Oncology

Our innovative radiation oncologists work with our treatment teams to provide the most advanced radiation therpy options to our patients. These treatments include stereotactic radiosurgery, SIRT and brachytherapy.

Pathology

The gastrointestinal (GI) cancer treatment team includes three specialist GI pathologists who are an integral part of the diagnostic evaluation of patients and the treatment conferences.
