Crystal Ball

Crystal Ball 2009 will be held at the Courtyards of Andover Saturday, April 4.
The annual Crystal Ball fundraiser gala is our largest benefit of the year, raising money for programs and services at Mercy and Unity hospitals. This memorable event is an evening of dinner, entertainment, silent and live auctions, and many other special activities. In 2008, the Crystal Ball raised more than $280,000 to support Take Heart Anoka County, a program who's goal is to improve the survival rate of sudden cardiac arrest through community CPR training and education.

This year’s theme, “Night of a Thousand Cranes," is inspired by the Asian legend of the paper cranes. According to the legend, if a sick person folds one thousand paper cranes, he or she will be granted a wish and made healthy again. Our wish is to raise money to support the cancer programs at the hospitals while having a fun and memorable evening. Our goal is to restore health to all of our cancer patients.

To achieve this goal, Unity Hospital will break ground on a integrated cancer center later this year. The Virginia Piper Institute at Unity Hospital will feature fully integrated, comprehensive cancer services (prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure). Fund raising proceeds will be used to provide comfort and healing to patients in chemotherapy, who are often in the area for 4-8 hours a day, for weeks or months at a time. These items may include laptops, televisions and DVDs, comfortable furniture, sound systems, massage chairs, individual lighting and heating controls, and others.

Mercy Hospital will use proceeds from the Crystal Ball for Cancer Center programs such as the patient emergency fund. Cancer patients frequently experience financial challenges due to their illnesses. This fund helps patients pay for medical expenses to continue their treatments, but it also helps patients meet daily living expenses—rent, food, childcare and the like—when they cannot work because of their cancer. For more information, or to donate to this special event, call the Mercy & Unity Hospitals Foundation office at 763-236-8199.

Charity golf tournaments

Every spring, summer and fall, tournaments at local golf courses support these and other efforts:

  • Mercy & Unity's Heart Safe Communities has helped place more than 50 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) throughout Anoka County to prevent deaths from sudden cardiac arrest. Read about recent AED placements.
  • The Sue Fischer Nursing Scholarship Fund was established in honor of Sue Fischer, a nurse at Unity Hospital who was murdered in her home in September 2004. Proceeds from the fund are awarded to students studying nursing. Read about the first golf tournament benefitting this fund.

Toys for Joy/Christmas at SACA

Employees and friends of Mercy & Unity Hospitals brighten someone's holiday by giving to Toys for Joy and Christmas at Southern Anoka Community Assistance (SACA). Every November and December, drop boxes throughout the hospitals collect non-perishable food, hats, mittens and toys for those local programs. Cash donations are also accepted.
