It is important that you arrive at the Day Surgery Center at the time you were
given by the nurse.
You may choose to be dropped off at the entrance on the southwest end of the
building (the intersection of Grand and Smith avenues), or you can enter and
park in the underground parking ramp (Green
Ramp) located just across from the southwest entrance. Once inside the building,
take the elevators to the second floor Day Surgery Center. Someone from the
Day Surgery Center staff will greet you.
Consent for surgery
You are required to sign a consent form for your surgery and your anesthesia.
Patients younger than 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal
guardian who will be responsible for signing the consent form.
What happens next?
Your records will be reviewed and your temperature, pulse and blood pressure
will be checked.
Just before surgery
You will have the opportunity to meet with your surgeon and anesthesiologist
before your surgery. Any intravenous fluids necessary for your surgery may be
started at this time.
Waiting room
While you are in surgery, family or friends may wait in the Family Waiting Room.
Your surgeon will meet them after your surgery.
What to expect after surgery
After surgery, you will be moved to an area where you can recover from the anesthesia.
When appropriate, you will move to another recovery room where your family can
be with you for the remainder of your recovery.
Discharge
Depending on the procedure performed and your surgeon’s instructions, you can
expect to be discharged within one to three hours after your surgery. You will
be prepared for discharge according to your surgeon’s orders.
A nurse will talk with you and give you a written summary of your surgeon’s
instructions about rest, diet and medications to be taken on the days following
your surgery.
If you have been sedated while at the Day Surgery Center, you may go home only
if you are accompanied by an adult. It is required that this individual stay
with you on your first night home.
For your protection and safety, you will not be allowed to drive.
Follow-up
A nurse from the Day Surgery Center will attempt to call you within 24 hours
of your surgery to check on your recovery.
Please call the surgeon if you develop any unexpected symptoms in the days following
your surgery.
