What is sports medicine?

Whether you are a competitive athlete with a recurring injury or a weekend warrior suffering an acute injury, sports medicine allows you to stay active.

Sports medicine uses a non-surgical approach to promote healing and recovery of muscle, bone, joint, ligament or tendon injuries. Sports medicine helps adolescents to older adults regain function, minimize pain and disability, and incorporate fitness into their daily lives.

Sports medicine physicians have a primary specialty in family practice or internal medicine, for example, with additional training in non-surgical orthopedics through an accredited program.

Sports medicine physicians specialize in non-operative treatment of injuries and painful musculoskeletal conditions as well as the medical care of the active patient. Most sports medicine physicians also serve as team physicians for local teams and clubs.

Sports medicine physicians also treat non-athletes and those beginning an exercise program. For recreational athletes or those with physically active hobbies, the same sports medicine expertise is used.
