Intensive Spine Strengthening Using MedX Equipment

lumbar extension machine The Sister Kenny Spine Center offers an intensive spine strengthening program using MedX equipment.

The MedX System

MedX treatment is based on the idea of restoring your strength to decrease pain. Studies have shown that the majority of patients with chronic back and neck pain are significantly deconditioned.

The MedX lumbar extension machine is designed to isolate the muscles of the low back to provide specific strengthening for the musculature of the lower spine. The MedX cervical extension machine is similarly designed to provide an effective means to strengthen the muscles of the neck.

Rehabilitation using the MedX lumbar and cervical machines is based on objective measurements and comparisons to actual norms, rather than based on subjective pain ratings. Using the MedX system allows you and your doctor to objectively evaluate your progress by measuring your strength gains.

What To Bring

  • On your first visit, please bring any scans (MRI, CT) or X-rays for the physician to review.
  • You should also wear comfortable workout attire, including tennis shoes.

What To Expect

On your first visit, you will be examined and evaluated by a physician.

After a thorough evaluation, the physician will determine if the MedX program is right for you. If so, you will be referred to our trained physical therapist to schedule an appointment to begin testing on the MedX equipment. This testing of your spine will give the physician accurate data on your spine’s condition. Your test scores will be compared to the norms for your age and sex, which will give us a baseline from which to work.

The Program

  • Your rehabilitation program will consist of attending treatment two to three times a week, for up to 12 weeks.
  • You will be instructed in a comprehensive program including stretching, strengthening using the MedX equipment, cardio and general strengthening using health club-type equipment or equipment that can be used at home.
  • Every four weeks you will be retested in the MedX equipment and have a follow-up with the physician to chart your progress and adjust the program as needed.
  • During your rehabilitation, you will be educated on a home program to maintain and improve your strength and conditioning.
