Standing Program

Patient in standing frame talking with a therapist. The Standing Program is designed to help individuals with spinal cord injuries to bear their body weight while standing. At Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, a therapist will help program participants use a standing frame, which allows a person with weak or paralyzed muscles to stand. Many people with spinal cord injuries also acquire a standing frame to use at home as an added measure to maintain their health.

There are many benefits of standing after a spinal cord injury, including:

  • prevention of pressure sores
  • improved circulation
  • decreased spasticity and spasms
  • maintenance of bone integrity
  • reduced swelling of lower extremities
  • maintenance of range of motion
  • strengthened cardiovascular system
  • increased endurance
  • improved bowel, bladder and kidney function, which may decrease infections.

Locations
The Standing Program is available at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis and United Hospital in St. Paul.

Referral
The Standing Program, like all other physical therapy services, requires a physician’s order. If you’re interested in participating in a standing program, discuss it first with your doctor. Your physician can make a referral by fax at 612-863-5698 or phone at 612-863-1924.
