Lifelong Follow-up and Re-evaluation

Spinal Cord System of Care

Spinal Cord Injury Follow-Up (SCIF) provides life-long follow-up related to issues of impairment, activity, participation and quality of life. SCIF offers an intensive outpatient physical medicine and rehabilitation evaluation with a physiatrist who is specially trained to address potential problems people with spinal cord injury encounter in addition to a general primary care physician.

Who May Benefit from SCIF?

SCIF is for people with spinal cord injuries (both traumatic and non-traumatic) who:

  • are discharged from Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute and remain in our service area after their acute medical needs have stabilized and are recommended by their physician to be followed on an annual basis.
  • choose follow-up care with Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Associates physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians.

Why Is SCIF Important?

After your injury and acute rehabilitation, it is important to reassess general health, neuromuscular status, bowel and bladder management, skin issues and wheelchair positioning for optimal health from time to time.

The goal of SCIF is to be proactive and intervene early before any potential complications arise.

SCIF uses a multidisciplinary approach that allows input from physical and occupational therapists, social workers, seating clinic staff, a urologist, a psychologist, a nurse and one of our rehab physicians to provide the best possible care based on your health care needs.

SCIF Frequency

Participants are contacted to schedule a SCIF appointment annually for the first five years following an injury, and as recommended by a physician in subsequent years.
