Inpatient Rehabilitation
Inpatient rehabilitation at Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute is provided through two distinct units: one at
Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis and the other at United Hospital in St. Paul.

The rehabilitation units provide comprehensive rehabilitation services and medical management for patients with:

Both units have earned Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) accreditation. This means they have met the highest industry standards for quality care and service. In addition, the unit at Abbott Northwestern is accredited for its Spinal Cord System of Care, the only such program in the Minneapolis/St Paul metropolitan area to receive this accreditation.

Admission Process
We accept referrals from physicians, social workers, nurses, therapists, discharge planners, insurers, case managers, patients and family members. Upon receiving a referral at United or Abbott Northwestern, one of our staff physiatrists (a board-certified physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation) will assess the patient’s ability to perform everyday activities, identify their rehabilitation needs and determine if inpatient rehabilitation is appropriate. Our admissions staff is also available to conduct on-site evaluations of prospective patients in local hospitals. If it is determined that a patient would benefit from an inpatient rehabilitation course, admission to Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute is arranged.

The Rehabilitation Team and Plan of Care
Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute staff members are professionals who specialize in rehabilitation. These specialists work in teams composed of physiatrists (rehab MDs), nurses, social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, therapeutic recreation specialists and neuropsychologists. Physicians from all major medical specialties are available on-site for consultation.

The team members assess the patient’s ability to function independently and, together with the patient and family, formulate a rehab plan designed for the patient to reach the highest level of performance and accomplish what he or she hopes to achieve by the time of discharge. A family conference with the physician or social worker, or a meeting with the social worker, will be held as soon as possible following the treatment team’s evaluation. The purpose of the conference is to discuss treatment goals and the anticipated discharge site. The patient’s length of stay is individualized based on the need of the patient.

Family Involvement
Family members are encouraged to accompany the patient upon admission to receive an orientation to the rehab unit. Education and therapy information sessions are available for family members who will be involved in managing the patient’s care after discharge. The treatment team will inform family members as to specific dates and times.

The Therapy Program
The rehabilitation program for Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute inpatients is individualized and well-coordinated. The Institute provides a healing environment that optimizes recovery. Patients receive a daily therapy schedule that is customized to their needs. Generally, patients receive six 30-minute sessions each day, which may include speech, occupational, physical and recreational therapy, and counseling or neuropsychological sessions. The team’s treatment plan continues during the weekend.

In addition, services from Abbott Northwestern Hospital’s Institute for Health and Healing may be utilized for patients on the Abbott Northwestern campus. These services may include reflexology, guided imagery, healing touch, massage and acupuncture.

When patients are ready to take the next step in their therapy, they are encouraged to use “home passes,” participate in day outings with their families, or stay in the apartment on the unit. These are opportunities to practice new skills and to discover possible issues before discharge.

Post-Discharge
Although rehabilitation often begins at Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, many patients continue with rehabilitation after discharge. This may include home care services, outpatient therapy, inpatient sub-acute rehabilitation or skilled nursing facility care. The rehabilitation team, together with the patient and family, will help determine a safe and appropriate discharge site upon leaving the Institute.
