Serenity Garden to be constructed this summer

It started out as an idea, then grew into a conversation and now this year will grow into a beautiful garden outside the New Ulm Medical Center’s (NUMC) Oncology Department. What is being dubbed the “Serenity Garden” is set to begin construction in Summer 2009.

The NUMC Foundation Advisory Board recently agreed to raise the necessary funds, up to $20,000, to make the project a reality. The project will be fully funded by donations through the NUMC Foundation. “The Foundation is very excited to do this project – what a great chance to create an exceptional experience for our patients,” said Carisa Buegler, NUMC Foundation director.

“We envision this as a place for patients and family members to take time to reflect, to meditate, to rest and relax,” said Pat Hartman, RN, a nurse in the Oncology Department. “And many family members of past patients will see it as a living tribute to their loved ones who aren’t here anymore.”

“This project is evidence of how the staff in the Oncology Department regards their patients,” Buegler said. “They don’t just treat patients’ symptoms and conditions. They treat the whole person – the body and the mind.”

The idea started with a lone bench that now sits outside the windows of the Oncology Department. Hartman had often said that she’d like a place outdoors where patients and visitors could sit on that bench. During a casual conversation following the annual Memorial Mass this year, Hartman; Barb Fenske, a volunteer in the Oncology Department and a member of the Foundation Board; Sharon Boisselle, master gardener, retail manager and landscape designer for River Creek Nursery and the widow of a former patient of the department; and another widow of an oncology patient who was looking for ways to memorialize her husband; the idea grew.

The plan includes trees, bushes, flowers, a patio area and benches for patients and visitors to enjoy. Because of the location of the garden just outside the Oncology Department, it will also serve to benefit those who may be with a loved one in the Emergency Department.

Boisselle’s husband Buzzy died after a bout of esophageal cancer in May 2008. Boisselle sees this garden not only as a tribute to him and others who have been lost to cancer, but also as a peaceful spot for current patients and visitors. “When we first talked about it, I thought how nice it would be for family members who are waiting for their loved one in the oncology department or other departments to have a place to sit outside on a nice day and feel the sun on their skin and relax,” she said.

Boisselle and River Creek donated their time in drawing up a plan for the approximately 70 foot by 18 foot space that will change with the seasons. “There will be some color there all year round – including evergreens in the winter and some shrubs that will turn colors in the fall.” Boisselle is hoping the spot may even become a destination for those out on an evening walk. Naming opportunities for donors to the project exist for donations received of $500 or more, including having names of loved ones inscribed on plaques, benches or boulders, Buegler said. All donations, no matter what size, are welcome and will make the project a reality.
