Benefits of MyChart apparent in times of urgent need

It is 4 a.m. You are bleary-eyed and torn between worry and exhaustion with a feverish baby. You’ve been up half the night but the baby has finally settled down. You have determined there is no choice but to go see the doctor in the morning.

Now comes the tough question: do you set the alarm to wake up in time to call for an appointment when the clinic opens or do you sleep in and hope you can get an appointment with the physician you prefer at the time you want?

But then you remember you just signed up for MyChart through the New Ulm Medical Center. You can make an appointment for the next day right then and there before you go to bed.

You jump on your computer and within minutes you have made the appointment and you know exactly how your morning will proceed.

MyChart was introduced in 2006 as an additional benefit of New Ulm Medical Center’s transition to an electronic medical record. Since that time many NUMC patients have reaped the benefits of managing appointments, the ability to print their children’s immunizations, view medical history, allergies and current medications, review and graph lab results, research health-related topics and view and pay bills online.

“MyChart is part of the New Ulm Medical Center’s overall objective to help our patients manage their own health care,” said Clinic Operations Director Jeff Messenger. “One of the most convenient aspects of MyChart is the ability to make appointments, or change or cancel them. But, this tool goes so much farther than that.”

Patients with chronic diseases, such as diabetes, are able to track lab results to watch for trends in their condition, Messenger said.

“This is the time of year many people make travel plans,” Messenger pointed out. “With MyChart, if you are unfortunate enough to have to visit a hospital or emergency room during your trip, you can give the healthcare professionals the ability to access your MyChart records so they can immediately see a list of your medications, recent test results, and recent office visits.”

To view an online demonstration of MyChart go to www.allina.com/mychart. From this site, you can also print a sign-up form to complete and turn in or mail to the New Ulm Medical Center. Once your completed form has been received, the signature on the form will be verified to confirm it matches the one in your file. This is just one of the security measures in place to make sure your information remains confidential – a secure log-in ID and password also protect access to your MyChart account.

You can also visit the New Ulm Medical Center booth at the New Ulm Home and Self Improvement Show March 28-30 where staff will be available to help patients sign up for MyChart on the spot.
