Fundraising portion of surgery project in last stages

The New Ulm Medical Center Surgery Department Expansion and Renovation Capital Campaign is at the crucial final steps, according to NUMC Foundation Director Carisa Buegler.

“We have had a fantastic response from our staff, physicians and board members in addition to community members and businesses,” Buegler said. “We are currently at 72 percent of our goal – now is the final push to the end.”

New Ulm Medical Center, as well as its parent corporation Allina Hospitals & Clinics, are both not-for-profit organizations, explained Buegler, “As not-for-profit organizations, we rely on the community as a vital partner to be able to continue to deliver an exceptional experience for our patients.”

Of the total $3.5 million needed for the project, Allina has committed $2.75 million which leaves $750,000 for the NUMC Foundation to raise. As of early February, Buegler reported, $538,014 had been raised:

  • $84,595 from the New Ulm Medical Center Auxiliary Board, members and volunteers.
  • $128,154 from NUMC employees.
  • $100,210 from physicians (pledges are still being received).
  • $86,550 from businesses and organizations (pledges are still being received).
  • $138,505 from community members (pledges are still being received).

Support from community members and businesses has been a key component to the success of the fundraiser, Buegler said. “I think the community and our partners in business can see the impact that having a successful medical center with a modern surgery center has on the rest of the community.”

“To me this was a very easy project to get behind,” said Mike Harrington, manager of Bank Midwest in New Ulm. “To have state-of-the-art facilities is important not just for me but for all ages and all people within a 30 mile radius or more.”

Harrington cited the importance of having “all the pieces” in place to maintain a healthy economy. Along with viable industry and schools, healthcare is one of those “pieces” Harrington said.

Anderson Custom Processing was another contributor to the project. Denise Anderson said they had donated to the last building project at the New Ulm Medical Center and felt it was important to contribute to this one.

“It is good for the community and for people coming in to town,” Anderson said. “The more we have to offer in terms of healthcare facilities, the better we can continue to attract people to the community.”

Community members Charlotte and Hobart Anderson were financially supportive of the project, as well as being co-chairs of the capital campaign committee, because of the exceptional experiences they’ve had at the medical center.

“We have used the hospital and clinic and we’ve both had surgeries at the New Ulm Medical Center,” Charlotte Anderson said. “The staff and physicians are all so capable, friendly and helpful. It is really a benefit to have a facility right here in town with the people with such strong skills – it gives you confidence and peace of mind when you have to undergo a surgical procedure.”

The Andersons felt that the improvement of the surgery center will add greatly to the already fine experience patients are receiving at the medical center.

Buegler said the campaign committee hopes to complete the final leg of the fundraising by the end of March.
