Physical Medicine

A wide range of therapies, skills and services are available in the New Ulm Medical Center physical medicine department. Among the services provided are physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, sports medicine services and cardiac rehabilitation services. This multi-faceted department provides services to patients of all ages, both hospitalized patients and outpatients. Our skilled staff includes physical and occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, athletic trainers and nurses.

All therapists and nurses in the department are licensed to practice in Minnesota and are required to take continuing education classes annually. Additionally, two therapists have certification in lymphatic therapy and one occupational therapist has extensive training in hand therapy.

Physical therapy treatment includes pediatric care, lymphatic treatment and therapeutic pool exercise as well as traditional care for rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries, pain and neurological problems causing limitations in function.

Occupational therapy treatment includes pediatric care, hand therapy, splint fabrication, and high functioning IADL evaluation as well as traditional care for rehabilitation following injuries or illness.

Speech therapy treatment includes pediatric care in addition to swallowing evaluation, memory and cognitive training as well as traditional care for rehabilitation following injury or illness.

Occupational medicine services includes pre-employment screens and education, job site ergonomic analysis and onsite education programs, provided by physical and occupational therapists.

Orthotic and prosthetic services are provided in the department by Prosthetic Laboratories of Mankato twice a month.

Cardiac Rehabilitation services is a program of supervised, monitored exercise sessions prescribed by a physician, with the purpose of enhancing physical condition following a heart attack or for persons with a known heart disease. The exercise equipment available includes arm ergometer, stationary bicycle, treadmill and NuStep. The Cardiac Rehabilitation staff is trained in cardiovascular nursing and rehabilitation of the person with cardiac disease.

Services of the physical medicine department expand beyond the walls of the New Ulm Medical Center facility, also. Our enthusiastic staff of certified athletic trainers provides sports injury prevention and treatment programs at area schools. Physical, occupational and speech services are also provided in area nursing homes.

A physician’s referral is required for treatment in our physical medicine department to allow for proper insurance reimbursement. Your insurance coverage will be assessed prior to beginning treatment if time allows. Your evaluation results and progress will be communicated to your doctor.
