Courtney Whitney, DO, receives board certification in sleep medicine

BUFFALO, Minn. 07/22/2005--Internist Courtney Whitney, DO, with the Allina Medical Clinic-Buffalo recently became a Diplomat of the American Board of Sleep Medicine after four years of special training and successfully completing an intense two part examination.

With only 61 doctors board-certified in sleep medicine in the state of Minnesota, Whitney’s expertise and commitment to helping patients uncover and treat sleep disorders is commendable.  “Sleep deprived people are more vulnerable to accidents and a number of serious health conditions.  Untreated, sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure and other cardiovascular disease along with memory problems, weight gain, impotency, depression and headaches,” says Whitney. And that includes as many as 18 million Americans, according to the National Institutes of Health.  Still, experts estimate that fewer than 10 percent of people who have it are aware of it.

Sleep apnea, the most common form of sleep disorder, actually stops your breathing as often as 20 to 30 times per hour, restarting it with a snort.  Although not everyone who snores has sleep apnea, virtually everyone who has sleep apnea snores.  A good night’s sleep isn’t a luxury – it is necessary for good health and optimal function. If you’re seeking a good night’s sleep, for you or your partner, schedule an appointment with Dr. Whitney at the Allina Medical Clinic-Buffalo today by calling 763-684-6001.
