Abbott Northwestern Hospital nurse Nancy Siemers, receives the American Heart Association, Greater Midwest Affiliate's Heart Hero Award
MINNEAPOLIS 10/29/2003--
Nancy Siemers, RN, CCTC, an Abbott Northwestern Hospital employee
since 1979, will receive the American Heart Association’s Everyday
Heart Hero Professional award on Nov. 1 at its Twin Cities Heart Gala.
A transplant nurse coordinator with Abbott Northwestern’s
Cardiothoracic Transplant Program since 1988, Siemers is responsible
for coordinating the transplant process for patients. She manages the
care of transplant candidates, recipients and those needing
mechanical heart support by providing clinical, educational and
emotional support to patients and their families. Prior to her
current role, Siemers spent nine years in the cardiovascular
intensive care unit at Abbott Northwestern. For the last several
years, she has also helped organize a team of cardiac recipients,
candidates and their families for the annual Twin Cities American
Heart Walk.
“Along with her clinical expertise, Nancy communicates a genuine
spirit of caring to her patients and families. She understands their
needs and goes out of her way to meet them,” said Frances Hoffman,
RN, MSN, director of Transplant Services. “Nancy contributes greatly
to the quality of care at Abbott Northwestern, and is a tremendous
asset to the Transplant Program.”
A heart transplant patient once said of Siemers, “She is a heart
transplant hero! She gets sick people up and over the mountain to new
health with a new healthy heart! The world could surely use more
nurses like Nancy!”
The American Heart Association’s Everyday Heart Hero Professional
award recognizes medical professionals including physicians,
cardiologists, neurologists, heart surgeons, nurses and researchers.
The award honorees must meet the criteria of outstanding professional
performance, commitment to the fight against cardiovascular disease,
a positive attitude that encourages patients to never give up,
leadership in his or her field and a strong commitment to community
involvement.
