Allina Hospitals & Clinics recently received six of the 22 awards given by the Minnesota Hospital Association (MHA) at their 2004 Annual Conference. The MHA Health Care Awards honor the best and brightest in Minnesota health care.

“As a health system, we are proud of the care we give and it shows in the work we do every day,” said Dick Pettingill, president and CEO. “Our employees are dedicated health care workers who give to the community in many ways through their work on the job and their volunteerism. I’m proud that our employees are being recognized for their innovative ideas, team work, and dedication to improving the safety of our patients.”

The Best Minnesota Hospital Workplace Award honors a hospital that “goes the extra mile” in enhancing employee satisfaction. This is the second time Buffalo Hospital has received the small hospital Best Minnesota Hospital Workplace Award. Judging was based on retention strategies and outcomes, demonstrated
effectiveness in raising employee morale, and employee descriptions of the work environment.

A Patient Safety Improvement Award was given to United Hospital for their effort in reducing the number of patient falls while being cared for at the hospital. This initiative examined the data, identified patients at risk for falls and developed effective prevention tools to help reduce falls. Judging of this award was based on commitment to improving the safety of patients through the implementation of innovative quality initiatives and effective patient safety programs and practices.

Buffalo Hospital received a second award for innovation in patient care for installing the first small hospital InstyMeds machine in the nation. An InstyMed machine is an automatic teller machine (ATM) dispenser of prescription medications for emergency and urgent care patients. Judging for this award was based on originality, scope, demonstrated effectiveness and potential for applicability to other hospitals.

The Health Care Career Promotion Award was given to Abbott Northwestern Hospital for the “Train to Work/Health Careers Institute.” This program encourages high school students to consider a health care-related career, provides financial grants, workshops and hands-on and interactive experiences in clinical areas of the hospital. Judging of this award was based on exemplary promotion of health careers to students and those interested in changing careers.

A Public Achievement award was given to former Mercy & Unity Hospital Board Member Betty Wall for her 43 years of service on the North Suburban Hospital District Board and for her dedication to rallying the community to build a suburban hospital—Unity Hospital. Wall had a vision and a dream to build community health care services in the north metro area. Judging of this award was based on an elected or appointed position or a private citizen who has performed extraordinary service in the health care policy arena.

Mark D. Rasmussen was named Hospital Volunteer of the Year for his dedicated work at Owatonna Hospital, benefiting patients and the hospital and serving as an inspirational example of hospital volunteerism.
