Minneapolis Heart Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital tops Business Journal's heart center list

MINNEAPOLIS 04/17/2009--Allina's Minneapolis Heart Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital ranks number one on Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal's Top 25 list of cardiac care centers. The Top 25 rankings are statewide and based the number of cardiac procedures performed in 2008.

"While procedural volume has been correlated to beneficial outcomes in many studies, collaboration, innovation, and quality are what distinguishes this program regionally and nationally," said Kevin J. Graham, MD, cardiologist and president of the Minneapolis Heart Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.

"We see patients from all over the region, but many patients are served throughout the Midwest who never make the journey to Minneapolis."

"Our model of keeping expensive, high tech, life-saving expertise and technology concentrated in one quaternary center and having appropriate patients come to Minneapolis when needed is now being imitated nationally as health care costs become the primary national economic concern."

"We are leading the nation here, and we are proud of how this system of care works for patients," said Dr. Graham.

Other Allina hospitals that made the Minnesota list are Mercy in Coon Rapids at seven; United in St. Paul at ten, and Unity in Fridley at 15.

A total of 6,741 procedures were performed at Abbott Northwestern; 3,463 at Mercy; 3,028 at United, and 296 at Unity.

The Top 25 list makers performed a total of 50,502 procedures, according to the Business Journal. The procedures included coronary artery bypass grafts, percutaneous coronary artery interventions, cardiac catheterizations, heart valve replacements and repairs and repairs of atrial and ventricular septa with prosthesis.

The list was published March 27. More information is available at mspbj.com.
