Thygeson named president of Allina Hospitals & Clinics' Center for Healthcare Innovation

MINNEAPOLIS 02/25/2010--N. Marcus Thygeson, MD, has been named president of the Center for Healthcare Innovation at Allina Hospitals & Clinics.

Dr. N. Marcus Thygeson

Launched in June 2008, the Center for Healthcare Innovation at Allina supports the organization's research activities by incubating new ideas and accelerating the adoption of evidence-based practices that support the integration and coordination of patient care to achieve clinical excellence, operating efficiency and optimal patient experience.

Dr. Thygeson will report to Allina President and CEO Kenneth H. Paulus.

"Dr. Thygeson brings a unique blend of experience, intellect, creativity and leadership to this role," said Paulus. "As a longstanding practicing physician, he bridges innovation with pragmatism and will guide the Center so that its outcomes are practical and applicable to our everyday work while helping to advance our patient care model of the future."

The Center

One way Allina Hospitals & Clinics is giving back to the community is through the The Center for Healthcare Innovation at Allina.

Main initiatives of the Center are:

  • the Backyard Initiative, which seeks to improve the health and health care of residents of a portion of South Minneapolis,
  • the Heart of New Ulm, which strives to eliminate heart attacks in the community of New Ulm, Minnesota, within 10 years,
  • the Allina Patient Safety Center, which will be a source of knowledge and information to create cultures of safety across Allina.

Dr. Thygeson joins Allina from HealthPartners, where he was associate medical director and vice president of consumer health solutions, and a senior fellow at the HealthPartners Research Foundation. He is currently finishing a one-year Bush Medical Fellowship studying the applications of complexity science to health care, with the specific goal of researching and developing new approaches to improving health care quality and affordability.

Dr. Thygeson graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1980, served as chief medical resident at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle during his residency, practiced family medicine in rural Washington State for two years and then completed a gastroenterology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco in 1987. He then went on to work as a practicing gastroenterologist in the Bay Area for 15 years.
