Allina's River Falls Area Hospital joins national health organization supporting environmental practices

RIVER FALLS, Wisc. 04/20/2009--River Falls Area Hospital is pleased to announce that it has made a significant commitment to environmental sustainability by joining Practice Greenhealth, a membership organization for institutions and businesses in the health care field who are engaged in reducing their environmental footprints.

Practice Greenhealth provides practical guidance, training, consultation, and business solutions to help its members in their efforts to implement environmentally responsible practices. More than 800 healthcare providers have joined Practice Greenhealth in the last year alone, indicating the growing commitment among the healthcare community to reduce its environmental impact.

"The hospital formed a 'Green Team' in 2008 to focus on improving the health of the environment in our community," stated Allison Peterson, Green Team chairperson. "Our team is focused on reducing waste, participating in community "green" events, and in making River Falls Area Hospital mercury free. An example is the elimination of stryofoam cups which were replaced with earth friendly coffee cups and sleeves. Another effort is the large Earth Day campus clean up event here on Wednesday April 22nd at 4:30 p.m. We're committed to efforts that improve the health of the communities we serve."

River Falls Area Hospital is committed to aligning their efforts with parent company Allina Hospitals & Clinics. Allina has recognized the need system wide to align business practices with environmental protection.

"We are very pleased to welcome River Falls Area Hospital to the Practice Greenhealth member community," stated Robert Jarboe, executive director of Practice Greenhealth. "Their membership demonstrates a real commitment to improving the environmental impact on their patients, staff and communities."
