New Ulm Medical Center Remains Minnesota Star Site

NEW ULM, Minn. 05/05/2006--New Ulm Medical Center (NUMC) recently completed its Occupational Safey Health Administration (OSHA) recertification and continues to be recognized for the employee safety work as a Minnesota Star site.

“Since the certification as a MNStar site three years ago, we have gotten to know you well and you have gotten to know us well,” said Ken Hickey, supervisor of OSHA Workplace Consultation. “So, our purpose for coming here was simply to make sure everything is still going well and we certainly found that it is.”

During three and half days of interviews and a review of the employee safety program, Hickey and Jim Collins, director of OSHA Workplace Consultation, interviewed 54 employees and leaders. During the closing conference, Hicky and Collins found the staff to be very open and did a great job during the interviews.

What they heard from employees during those interviews is that everyone is involved and knows what is happening with the safety program at NUMC. Staff know who to go to if they have questions. Employees said they feel supported by leadership when it comes to making NUMC the safest possible place to work. Employees understand why safety makes good business sense. Staff recognize the importance of safety and take pride in being a part of an organization that does so well in that area.

“New Ulm Medical Center is a world class organization when it comes to employee safety,” said Hickey.

“You are one of the best of the best,” Jim Collins agreed. “There are 158,000 employers in Minnesota and you are one of only 14 MNStar sites in the state and one of 1,500 nationwide. You are the only hospital and clinic who has been designated a MNStar site in Minnesota.”

“Congratulations on maintaining the high standards you achieved three years ago,” Ken said. “It takes a lot of hard work and great commitment to keep those standards.”

The consultants also recognized NUMC Safety Manager Laurie McPhee for her leadership and commitment to employee safety and the MNStar program. They also recognized her as a partner in that she has been asked by OSHA to assist them in evaluating other sites for MNStar certification.
