Free Mercy Hospital forum explores lung cancer
COON RAPIDS, Minn. 10/27/2008--Local experts will host a free community forum, Diagnosis: Lung Cancer on Thursday, November 13 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Mercy Hospital, 4050 Coon Rapids Blvd. in Coon Rapids.
Oncologist Dr. Stephen Mann with Humphrey Cancer Center, surgeon Dr. Mark Solfelt with Twin Cities Heart & Lung, and social worker Marcia Carlson with Mercy Hospital's Cancer Center will lead the forum with lecture and presentations.
"Lung cancer education is an important tool for both prevention and treatment of this difficult disease," said Dr. Mann. "We are committed to preventing lung cancer and supporting those already diagnosed."
The forum will focus on prevention, detection, and treatment trends for lung cancer patients and supporting those diagnosed with this disease. The forum will conclude by providing participants with an interactive opportunity to ask questions of the experts.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in the United States and the world. It accounts for more deaths than breast, prostate and colon cancer combined, according to the American Cancer Society 2008 Cancer Facts & Figures. Because smoking accounts for 85 percent of all lung cancer cases, it is also one of the most preventable cancers.
To register for the forum, people can call Mercy Hospital's Cancer Resource Center at 763-236-4040. Continuing credits are available to health professionals.
