Abbott Northwestern Hospital opens Liberty Club for veterans with donations from Best Buy
MINNEAPOLIS 11/02/2009--Abbott Northwestern Hospital has served more than 1,000 veterans since it became part of Project HERO. Project HERO is a regional healthcare delivery initiative of Humana Veterans Healthcare Services.
To honor veterans, Abbott Northwestern will hold a grand opening of the Liberty Club on Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to noon. The Liberty Club is located next to the first floor lobby of Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute at Abbott Northwestern.
Dan Glassic, one of Abbott Northwestern's first Project HERO patients, plans to be there. He will be wearing two hats. Glassic will represent Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn who is out of town and all veterans enrolled in the Project HERO network.
After Glassic had surgery for injuries resulting from Desert Storm, he went to work for Best Buy. Best Buy donated a big-screen LCD TV and high-definition DVD player to the Liberty Club.
Abbott Northwestern vice president and Vietnam-era veteran Darryl Schroeder and other employees advocated for the Liberty Club. "We are trying to make the veteran's experience exceptional, and we want them to have a place where they can mingle and feel at home."
Also attending will be Tim McCain, president and CEO, Humana Veterans Health Care.
Abbott Northwestern, with the support of more than 20 private practice groups and physicians on the Abbott Northwestern Medical Staff, is the only hospital in the Twin Cities under contract with Humana to provide veterans with medical, surgical, diagnostic, rehabilitation and other health care services when the services are not specifically available for patients at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center.
