Groundbreaking for new Fridley Medical Center at Allina's Unity Hospital held today

FRIDLEY, Minn. 12/16/2009--The groundbreaking ceremony for the Fridley Medical Center was held Wednesday, December 16 at 9:30 a.m. at the future site of the new expanded clinic on Osborne Road in Fridley. The site is located on the northwest corner of Osborne Road and 5th Street on the campus of Allina's Unity Hospital.

The ceremony marked the beginning of a construction project for the expansion of the Multicare Associates primary care and specialty clinic. The two-story, 60,000 square-foot medical office building also will house the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute™ at Unity Hospital in partnership with Minnesota Oncology. A pharmacy and outpatient rehabilitation clinic are also planned for the site.

AMCON Construction is the main contractor for the $14 million project that is expected to be completed in the fall of 2010.

Speakers at the groundbreaking ceremony included:

"The groundbreaking marks a truly momentous day for Unity Hospital, Multicare Associates, Minnesota Oncology and the entire community," says Rickie Ressler, Unity Hospital president. "It will allow us to create a new health care experience for patients, families, staff and visitors."

The Virginia Piper Cancer Institute™ at Unity Hospital

The ceremonious shoveling of earth symbolizes the fulfillment of a long-held vision by cancer specialists for a new cancer center for the community. The well-known Virginia Piper Cancer Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital is going to extend its patient care model to the new cancer center at Unity Hospital.

The Virginia Piper Cancer Institute at Unity Hospital will partner with Minnesota Oncology to provide a full-service oncology clinic, with a variety of holistic patient services including genetic counseling, chemotherapy, integrative care, a supportive Cancer Resource Center and a specialty retail shop, in one location on Unity's campus. Unity and Abbott Northwestern hospitals are part of Allina Hospitals & Clinics and will collaborate in the oversight of cancer programs and services offered by the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute.

"Cancer is a difficult diagnosis, and patients need immediate access to those who can satisfy those needs," says Dr. Stephen Mann, oncologist and Unity Oncology Program medical director. "This center will allow us to co-locate in one space the different specialists that are required to care for cancer patients – from surgeons to social workers – to provide the comprehensive care our patients and families need and deserve."

Minnesota Oncology is recognized for its multi-specialty approach to cancer care, offering its patients documented, effective, disease-specific treatments; and for its commitment to making cancer care convenient to the community.
