Public is invited to free cancer forumFRIDLEY, Minn. 08/26/2008--Every five minutes, someone in the United States is diagnosed with a leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma, accounting for more than 135,000 new cases in the United States in 2007. Of those, nearly a third will die from their disease. Who's at risk? According to the Center for Disease Control, hematological (blood) cancer affect all ages, races, ethnicity and gender. "Although risk factors vary, men tend to get more of these cancers than women," says Oncologist Dr. Noel Laudi of the Hubert Humphrey Cancer Center. Lymphomas, myelomas and leukemias start in a cell in the bone marrow or lymphatic tissue and are known as blood cancers. Dr. Laudi will lead a free public forum on blood cancers Thursday, September 18 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Unity Hospital, 550 Osborne Road in Fridley. Risk factors, prevention, detection and current treatment trends will be discussed in an interactive format. The forum is open to anyone interested in lymphomas, myelomas and leukemias. Although educational credits will be provided to medical professions, the general public is welcome to participate in the event. Registration is recommended by calling Unity Hospitals' Cancer Center at 763-236-4040. More about Unity HospitalUnity Hospital in Fridley responds to a wide range of health care needs.
