Buffalo Hospital adds digital mammography05/09/2008--Buffalo Hospital is expanding local health and wellness services for women with the addition of a digital mammography system. Digital mammography offers distinct advantages over traditional film-based mammography, including enhanced image quality, less exposure to radiation, and results are available sooner. With digital mammography on site, Buffalo Hospital can offer patients the highest level of care in the prevention and early detection of breast cancer. Because radiologists can manipulate the acquired images, digital technology means better early detection for many women, especially those with dense breasts. In conjunction with the digital mammography unit, Buffalo Hospital offers Computer-Aided Detection (CAD), which provides a “second read” of the mammogram by computer. This is like having a second set of eyes looking at the images and assists the radiologist in making an accurate diagnosis. "We're pleased that our patients can benefit from this new, innovative technology in a comfortable, compassionate setting that is close to home,” says radiologist Kurt Scheurer, M.D. “We also recently refurbished our mammography suite, thanks to funding from the Buffalo Rodeo, sponsored by the Buffalo Hospital Foundation.” Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women. Statistics show that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her life. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman's survival. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 97 percent. To schedule a digital mammogram or learn more about this important preventive screening, please call 763-684-7900, option 1.
