Margo Tolins-Mejia, MD, receives Unity Hospital's Leadership AwardFRIDLEY, Minn. 11/30/2007--Cardiologist Margo Tolins-Mejia, MD, is this year's recipient of the William Carr, MD, Leadership Award. The award is given by the medical staff of Mercy and Unity hospitals to a Unity physician who is regarded by peers as an excellent clinician, has been on staff for a minimum of 10 years and has a history of service to the hospital and community. Currently, Tolins-Mejia is medical director for the Cardiovascular Short Stay unit and physician lead for the Heart Catheterization Laboratory at Unity Hospital. She is the medical advisor for the Women's Heart Center at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids.
Margo Tolins-Mejia, MD, was honored by the Medical Staff of Mercy and Unity hospitals at its annual recognition and awards dinner November 17 at Edinburgh USA Golf Course in Brooklyn Park. Tolins-Mejia was born and grew up in New York, and graduated from Syosset High School. She attended Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, and graduated from medical school at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Minnesota Hospital, and a three-year fellowship in cardiovascular diseases at the University of Minnesota Medical School Department of Medicine, Cardiovascular Division. She started her career at Mercy as a house physician (now referred to as a hospitalist) in 1983 while she was a cardiology fellow. In 1986, she started a cardiology practice with Brian Anderson, MD, that grew into Metropolitan Cardiology Consultants, PA. This was the same year she started practicing at Unity. In addition to her leadership roles at Unity and Mercy, she is a member of numerous professional associations such as the American Heart Association, Melpomene Institute for Women's Health Research, American College of Chest Physicians, American College of Cardiology and an Associate with the American College of Physicians. She has served in the roles of director of cardiac services and chief of cardiology at Metropolitan Medical Center. She has also written numerous articles on cardiology issues for professional journals and has presented at the scientific meetings of the American Heart Association and American College of Physicians. Tolins-Mejia has been recognized as Top Doctor in the Minneapolis-St Paul magazine and as Top Doctor Chosen by Women in Minnesota Monthly. Currently, she is a community speaker on public education regarding women's cardiac risk factors. She is active in educational programs for nurses and conducts a monthly conference for Unity staff on various cardiac topics. She is a strong advocate of staying physically fit. She has competed in triathlons and marathons – completing the Boston Marathon in 1984. This summer, she and she husband bicycled 150 miles from their home in south Minneapolis to their cabin in Wisconsin. She also is an avid reader and belongs to two book clubs, which is why stationary biking works so well for her. She can read and bike at the same time. Unity Hospital, located in Fridley, is a 274-bed non-profit hospital that serves the northwestern Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The hospital, which is part of Allina Hospitals & Clinics, cared for more than 120,000 patients in 2006.
