New Ulm Medical Center hits campaign goal for new surgery centerNEW ULM, Minn 10/03/2008-- New Ulm Medical Center Foundation officials announced today the successful conclusion of its $750,000 capital campaign. The campaign will help fund the New Ulm Medical Center’s surgery expansion and renovation. “We’re fortunate to have the community support that made our goal achievable,” said Kathleen Backer, Campaign Co-Chair and Board Chair of the New Ulm Medical Center Foundation. “The new surgery center is an important cornerstone of our mission to provide excellent care and fulfill the growing health care needs of our community.” Campaign co-chairs Dr. Mario DeSouza and Kathleen Backer led the efforts of 74 volunteers. They worked more than a year to raise $750,000 in contributions. Allina Hospitals & Clinics has committed $2.75 million toward the balance of the project’s total cost. Even though the capital campaign has been completed, the Foundation will continue to accept donations for surgery center enhancements. Generosity was key to this campaign with over 1,550 community members, staff, physicians and volunteers donating to the project. The New Ulm Medical Center Board of Trustees, Foundation Board, management team and administration all had 100 percent participation in this fundraising effort from its members. “Through this campaign, we’ve seen in a very tangible way that community members are proud to call New Ulm Medical Center their community health care facility – to take ownership in the success of it,” Backer said. “The sense of community pride and knowledge that health care is an important piece of the economic success of the community as a whole was very evident from our donors.” Construction is underway at New Ulm Medical Center to create two new operating rooms and increase the size of an existing operating room. The larger space will accommodate new technology and equipment and expand storage and waiting areas. About 1,800 surgical procedures are performed each year in New Ulm. The new operating rooms are scheduled to open by the end of 2008 and the entire project will be completed in spring 2009.
