Owatonna Hospital staff pledges nearly $35,000 to 2008 Community Giving Campaign

OWATONNA, Minn. 12/30/2008--The staff at Owatonna Hospital, part of Allina Hospitals & Clinics, has pledged nearly $35,000 to support the Owatonna Hospital Foundation and the United Way during its 2008 annual Community Giving Campaign. One hundred percent of employee contributions to the Owatonna Hospital Foundation will help support a new solarium, Employee Emergency Assistance Fund and general funds for the new Owatonna Hospital, which is slated to open in October 2009.

An artist rendering shows the solarium, located near the hospital cafeteria, where visitors and staff can enjoy a bite to eat while looking out at the Outdoor Healing Garden in the new Owatonna Hospital.

The United Way of Steele County will receive a separate $10,000 donation from Owatonna Hospital to support the Parent Provider Connection Well Baby Initiative, which pairs young, low-income and at-risk families with a parenting coach. This coach provides education and emotional support to the new parent beginning with a hospital visit at the Birth Center.

"At Owatonna Hospital, we’re committed to helping people in the communities where we live and work," said Dorothy Erdmann, president, Owatonna Hospital. "Providing emergency assistance to our own staff in time of crisis, enhancements to our new hospital and access to new parenting programs outside of our hospital walls makes everyone involved feel like they are making a difference."

Owatonna Hospital, as part of Allina Hospitals & Clinics, provides a combined campaign that gives their 22,000 employees the opportunity to make gifts designated to programs within Allina, as well as to any United Way or other nonprofit organizations.

"Across the nation, hospitals are seeing increased demands in charity care and bad debt due to individuals losing their jobs and their health insurance, as well as the use of high-deductible and high co-pay plans," said Erdmann. “In addition, hospitals nationwide continue to receive less reimbursement from insurance companies and government programs than what it costs to provide service," said Erdmann. "Though these challenges are difficult for hospitals, Owatonna Hospital will not stop delivering exceptional patient care and supporting our community through various programs and services."
