Cancer detection

Mercy Hospital's Cancer Center offers a full range of diagnostic capabilities including:

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)- Used by physicians to “see through” bones into underlying soft tissues without the use of x-rays or other radiation.

Computerized Tomography (CT) scanning- Generates two-dimensional, cross-sectional views of the organs, vessels and bones of the body.

Clinical laboratory
Dedicated pathologists, physicians who specialize in the study of disease processes, conduct clinical testing and anatomical pathology services. Microscopic examinations of body tissue are performed which are critical to cancer diagnosis. DNA flow cytometry analyzes the DNA composition of the cancer cells and assesses their growth rate.

Breast diagnostic center
Mercy's Breast Diagnostic Center offers many services including:

  • High quality diagnostic mammography  - Diagnostic mammogram films are read by radiologists who are experts in interpreting mammograms. You will receive your results before you leave the center.
  • Breast ultrasound  - The ultrasound uses harmless sound waves to detect specific breast abnormalities.
  • Stereotactic core breast biopsy  - This procedure’s goal is to obtain a small tissue sample using a specialized mammography unit, a computer and a special biopsy needle. This procedure sometimes replaces a surgical biopsy. Mammotome core biopsy can remove a larger tissue sample and sometimes much of the cancerous tissue.
  • Ultrasound-guided breast biopsy  - This procedure uses ultrasound guidance to obtain a tissue sample for biopsy.
  • Pre-Surgical Wire Localization  - Wires are inserted by radiologists under mammography or ultrasound guidance into lesions that cannot be felt. These wires guide the surgeon to the exact area that needs to be removed.
  • Breast MRI  - An MRI evaluates the extent of a breast cancer. It can also determine whether a breast implant has ruptured.
  • Nurses  - Help you interpret test results and assist you in taking next steps.
