As a mission-driven organization, Allina Hospitals & Clinics strives to provide exceptional health care and to improve the health of the communities it serves.
The goal of the Backyard Initiative is to improve the health and health care of people who live in South Minneapolis near Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Allina Commons and Phillips Eye Institute. Despite having world-class medical care "right in their backyard," many experience poor health and cannot afford health care.

Citizen Health Action Teams (CHATs)
The Backyard Initiative has moved to a new phase with the establishment of Citizen Health Action Teams (CHATs). Residents of the Backyard neighborhoods formed 12 CHATs, each with a different focus for maintaining and improving health.

Where is the Backyard?
The Backyard is the approximately one square mile area surrounding Allina Commons (Allina's corporate headquarters), Abbott Northwestern Hospital and Phillips Eye Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Backyard includes the neighborhoods of Ventura Village, Phillips West, Midtown Phillips, East Phillips, Central, Powderhorn Park and Corcoran. The boundaries are Interstate 94, Interstate 35W, 38th Street South and Hiawatha Avenue.
Facts about the Backyard
Nearly half of Allina's 23,000 employees work in the Backyard. About 500 live in the Backyard.
Twenty-five percent (11,621) of Backyard residents are Allina patients
The Backyard is home to one of the most diverse communities in Minnesota. About 32 percent of its residents are white, 26 percent are black, 22 percent are Hispanic, and 7 percent are American Indian.
About one-fourth of the community is foreign born.
While high school graduation rates are comparable to Minnesota as a whole, unemployment is twice the state rate (9.8 percent compared to 4.3 percent).
Almost 44 percent of the community is low income.
