Postgraduate Administrative Fellowship: Program objectives and structure

Objectives

The Administrative Fellowship is designed to give fellows an opportunity to apply graduate study principles in the practical setting of a vibrant health care organization. The program is designed to be both challenging and professionally rewarding.

Over the course of the fellowship, fellows will...

  • interact regularly with the executive leadership team as an active participant
  • acquire demonstrable leadership experiences that will position the fellow for a full-time leadership assignment within the health care industry
  • gain executive level experience at both an operating unit and system level
  • complete assignments that will give the fellow leadership experience and contribute to Allina's strategic success

Ken Paulus

“The goal of Allina’s Administrative Fellowship Program is to attract top talent to our vibrant and growing organization.  The fellowship presents a tremendous learning opportunity and lets fellows interact with leadership at all levels of the organization. The program also provides the fellow with a chance to lead demanding projects,
deliver real results, and demonstrate his or her leadership ability. I am personally committed to ensuring that every fellow’s experience is both professionally rewarding and challenging.”

Structure

Allina's Administrative Fellowship is a 12-month experience, flexible enough to meet fellows’ needs and the needs of the organization. Allina’s CEO will work with the fellow to design a dynamic leadership experience.

Rotations and roles - Fellows complete rotations in hospital, clinic and corporate service settings. Rotations typically last four to six months and are selected from current organizational priorities, such as business development, strategic planning, hospital and clinic operations, clinical program development, process improvement, finance and government relations. In addition, Allina encourages fellows to take on an interim management role at some point during the fellowship if the opportunity arises.

Preceptors and mentors - Allina’s CEO oversees the program and will serve as the fellow’s mentor for the duration of the fellowship program. Fellows will also interact with Allina board of directors, senior executives and medical leaders.

Daryl Schroeder “Being a preceptor for the Fellowship Program has been very inspiring for me because I get to teach new, adventurous leaders the art of taking risks, giving 110 percent and making changes that contribute to the strategic success of Allina.
It is our goal as hospital leaders to learn as much from this new group of leaders who represent the thinking of tomorrow.”
