Major depression and electro convulsive therapy (ECT)

Depression is persistent unhappiness with decreased energy, loss of appetite, changes in sleep patterns, withdrawal and suicidal thoughts. Major depression is when a person has five or more symptoms of depression for at least 2 weeks.

Depression can be treated in many ways. Most people benefit from medicine and counseling.

Electro convulsive therapy (ECT) may help people with major depression who don't respond to other treatments.
