Sleeve gastrectomy

Allina Locations

This surgical weight loss option is available at...

This operation affects weight by restricting the stomach's size.

About 75 percent of the stomach is removed, leaving a small, thin, tube-like stomach with a capacity of about three to four ounces.

The intestinal tract is not rearranged as in gastric bypass. The digestive enzymes are not diverted as in open biliopancreatic diversion.

Sleeve gastrectomy is done as a primary weight loss surgery only on certain patients. It may be planned as the first part of a two-stage operation.
