Women’s lives with their families are amazingly diverse. Underlying the diversity of roles and activities, though, is the common denominator of stress. Mental Health Services professionals affiliated with the WomenCare program are experienced in understanding the unique stresses facing women. These professionals have the skills to help women and their families learn how to better cope.
Among the stressful situations for women are childbearing and fertility issues, postpartum depression, single parenting, “empty nest” concerns, the complexity of dealing both with children and aging parents, grieving brought on by the loss of a spouse or partner, and chemical dependency issues. WomenCare’s Behavioral Health Services can assist women in managing stress, which can depress immune system responses and increase a woman’s susceptibility to disease.
Abbott Northwestern’s Health Psychology Services offers women specialized psychological care, addressing emotional issues that contribute to, or result from, various medical disorders. This includes treatment of eating disorders, anxiety disorders and phobias; biofeedback and hypnotherapy services; neuropsychological assessment and treatment of acquired brain dysfunction; management of chronic pain; and adjustment to chronic physical illness.
