Practice Management Rotation
The practice management residency is provided in two ways:
1. Management meetings and responsibilities
First, the residency includes a longitudinal component of practice management, the most tangible component of which is weekly participation in departmental management meetings.
2. Preceptorship with a department manager
Second, the Practice Management rotation of the residency is a focused, five week experience under the preceptorship of a department manager. Practice management includes a diverse exposure to operational management, including management of personnel, financial operations, billing and compliance, information systems and pharmacy dispensing technology.
Project work
During the rotation, a project is completed that has direct impact on day-to-day operations of the pharmacy. The project experience includes some or all the elements of:
- process improvement
- development of a best practice
- financial assessment
- regulatory relevance
- policy and procedure creation
- staff education/inservice and implementation
The resident accompanies the pharmacy manager to meetings with other professions or vendors, providing the opportunity for discussions related to the meeting topic, tactics and strategies.
The resident is assigned readings for the rotation focusing on organizational leadership and timely industry topics. Those readings are then discussed with the preceptor.
Interactive presentations with the preceptor address topics such as relationships with the pharmaceutical industry, group purchasing, and other timely topics.
