Cardiology Residency Rotation

Located in the Heart Hospital, the program involves cardiology patients with conditions such as including CHF, arrhythmia, acute coronary syndrome (ACS), primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH), interventional, cardiac surgery patients and critically ill patients with a cardiology-related primary diagnosis.

Objectives

Once through the rotation, the resident should be able to:
1. identify patient specific problems in cardiology patients
2. use clinical therapeutic knowledge and apply to patient problems
3. monitor therapeutic drug regimens for efficacy and toxicity
4. effectively manage the medications of cardiology-related conditions through recommendations and discussion sessions with preceptors


Daily/weekly activities

  • review assigned patients
  • see new patients/MD consults
  • patient discussions with preceptor(s)
  • topic discussions with preceptor(s)
  • possibility to round with a Cardiologist within various specialty areas
  • cardiology Grand Rounds - weekly

Other activities

  • journal club
  • topic presentations
  • drug information for the patient care team
  • special projects (i.e. MUE, data collection, inservices)
  • Cath lab observation (optional)

Interaction with health care professionals

The patient care team includes physicians, pharmacists, nurses, dieticians, speech therapists, social workers, chaplains and respiratory therapists.
Residents are expected to interact with each member as appropriate and gain experience and confidence as a member of the care team.

  • advance cardiac life support (acls) guidelines
  • hemodynamic monitoring
  • pulmonary embolism
  • deep vein thrombosis
  • cerebral vascular accident/intracerebral hemorrhage
  • primary pulmonary hypertension
