About Phillips Neighborhood
The Abbott Northwestern Hospital campus is located in one of Minnesota’s most
diverse communities: Phillips. Just south of downtown Minneapolis, Phillips is
home to nearly 20,000 residents. According to the 2000 Census, about 31 percent
of Phillips residents are White, 29 percent are African American, 22 percent are
Latino American, 12 percent are American Indian and 6 percent are Asian American.
Phillips is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Minneapolis. One of its main streets,
Park Avenue, is known for its historic mansions that were built by industrialists
in the 1920s. Today, many of those mansions have been renovated and are now home
to new businesses and non-profit agencies.
In West Phillips, the old Honeywell headquarters is now home to Wells Fargo Home
Mortgage. Other organizations in the community include the Phillips Eye Institute,
Saint Mary’s College, Lutheran Social Services, the American Swedish Institute,
Children’s Hospitals and Clinics - Minneapolis, Andersen School and Four Winds
School.
The neighborhood’s numerous specialty businesses such as Ingebretsen’s
Scandinavian Gifts and Foods, Mercado Central, the Heart of the Beast Puppet Theater
and the Ancient Traders Market reflect the neighborhood’s cultural diversity.
