The factors that contribute to the cause of cancer are complex and varied. Although only a small portion of breast cancer results from major inherited risk, by obtaining a detailed family, personal and medical history, a certified genetic counselor can help you determine if there is such a concern in your family.
The counselor can also help you assess your risks for cancer and determine if further genetic testing will be helpful. In partnership with a physician, if indicated, the counselor will help you develop a strategy of prevention and surveillance to deal with high-risk status.
