Piper Lung Cancer Program Research Studies

Smoking Cessation Study

The Virginia Piper Cancer Institute is conducting a study to evaluate the success of the Clean Break Smokers’ Treatment program in assisting participants to quit smoking. The study will determine how many participants have complete, continuous abstinence from smoking at three, six and 12 months following participant enrollment in the Clean Break Smokers’ Treatment program. The overall goal of this project is to improve abstinence from smoking.

Lung Screening Study

The Virginia Piper Cancer Institute is participating in a study, called the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) through the National Cancer Institute. The Virginia Piper Cancer Institute recruited over 6,000 participants for the trial. The NLST study which began in 2002 and will be completed in 2009, is examining whether screening CT or chest x-rays can reduce deaths from lung cancer in 53,000 current or former smokers without symptoms of the disease.
