Piper Lung Cancer Program
The diagnostic and treatment process for lung cancer can be a difficult experience, affecting all aspects of a person’s life. Taking that into consideration, the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute’s Piper Lung Cancer Program is designed to address the physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs of the person and their family.
Physician Participation
Experienced physicians from medical oncology, pathology, pulmonology, surgery, radiation oncology and palliative medicine actively work together in the Piper Lung Cancer Program. They meet regularly to participate in multidisciplinary treatment planning conferences to improve the quality of care provided. Each physician works diligently to ensure that necessary information is shared within the program and also with the patient’s primary care physician.
Care Coordination
A key component of the Piper Lung Cancer Program is the nurse coordinator role. The nurse coordinator meets with patients as needed to provide support and to assist them in effectively navigating the medical system from initial diagnosis and treatment through follow-up.

Program Components
Other major program components include the CleanBreak Smoking Cessation Program and clinical research, including the National Lung Screening Trial.
Diagnostic and Treatment Services
The most current diagnostic and treatment equipment and procedures are available to the Piper Lung Cancer Program through Abbott Northwestern Hospital. These include spiral CT scans, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), and video assisted thoracotomy (VAT). VAT allows for a less invasive procedure than traditional thoracotomy, leading to a faster recovery and the ability to begin other treatments sooner.
