Esophageal & Gastric Care Program

The Esophageal and Gastric Care Program is a comprehensive cancer program of the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute (VPCI). It has been designed to provide a multi-disciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of esophageal and gastric diseases. This program is the result of a coordinated effort of medical and surgical specialists, nurses, researchers and support staff who have a special interest and training in esophageal and gastric disorders. The latest treatment modalities will be made available according to each patient’s needs. Complementary therapies will be offered to supplement the more standard treatment modalities.

A key member of the Esophageal and Gastric Care Program team is the nurse coordinator. The nurse coordinator meets with patients and families to provide support and assist them in efficiently navigating the medical system from diagnosis and treatment to follow up. The role of the nurse coordinator involves working closely with the patient and various physician offices to coordinate tests and appointments as a patient goes through the work up and staging process.
