Return to Esophageal & Gastric Care Program

How is Barrett's esophagus treated?

A proactive approach to the treatment of Barrett's esophagus is available at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. Radio-frequency ablation of the esophagus has been used to treat the condition before it progresses to cancer. Through the use of energy to heat and destroy Barrett's cells, physicians can remove the thin layer of diseased esophageal tissue allowing the growth of health cells in three to four weeks for most patients.
