What to expect: Your first call

When you call to learn more about hospice services a nurse will provide information and explain services and may ask questions like:

  • What is the patient’s diagnosis and how they are doing?
  • Who is the patient’s doctor or who is suggesting hospice?
  • What is the insurance coverage such as Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurance or other plan?

The nurse will talk with you about:

  • Care in your situation and answer questions.
  • Scheduling a visit at your home or the nursing home/assisted living residence within the next 24 hours.

If you want to schedule a visit, the nurse may:

  • Call your doctor to obtain more information.
  • Verify your Medicare or insurance coverage.
  • Set an appointment for an evaluation visit.

If you do not want to schedule a visit, the admissions nurse may

  • Send you information for future use.
  • Offer to call you at a pre-arranged time in the future.
