Meet your doctor interview with Bruce Young, MD
Announcer: This is Allina's Meet Your Doctor.
Today, Dr. Bruce Young from Allina Medical Clinic's Brooklyn Park clinic.
Dr. Bruce Young: I originally came from Canada and we moved to Minnesota about twelve years ago, partially because of a change in career, but I think we were also looking for a nicer place to live.
I came to Allina twelve years ago and in early 2009 decided to move to the Brooklyn Park clinic wanting to be at a bit smaller clinic and change my practice to a smaller practice, to a more personal practice.
I do general family practice. We see all ages. I enjoy seeing children. I did obstetrics before joining Allina. Don't do that anymore, but I do see a lot of children and enjoy that. I see a full range of ages. One of the nice things about family practice is you get to see the entire family grow up and get to see them for their whole lifetime.
When I was in medical school I looked at a number of different specialties and what I found is that the variety in family practice is what keeps it interesting. I just couldn't see myself doing one small area. Granted, it's great to be an expert at something, but over the course of the day the repetition that you see in a number of the specialties, I thought, would not be very exciting.
One of the nice things about Allina is the number of options. Some people like a larger clinic. Some people prefer a much smaller more intimate clinic which is the reason I wanted to move into Brooklyn Park. We still have all the options of Allina--the hospital, the specialists. I still refer to the same specialists as I always have, but it's nice being in a very small clinic where you can tend to the patient, the whole family and they get to now the staff. They get to know you well and I think it makes for a better medical experience.
Within the northwest area there's been a pretty strong relationship with the Allina Medical Clinics with Mercy Hospital in the past and we'll maintain that. Certainly, Mercy has the heart center listed a one of the top 100 in America and we're going to maintain that relationship, but the other thing we have tried to do with Allina is by building the newer clinics which are closer to Unity Hospital is to allow us that option of utilizing Unity’s facilities. They've done tremendous improvement there building a very large emergency department which is state of the art. They're building a new cancer center and so we're going to be able to take advantage of that by being in closer proximity to that.
So I see it as an opportunity to use both hospitals. It gives our patients more options.
