Hand washing 101

Experts agree, the simplest, most effective way to avoid the flu and other viruses -- and keep from infecting others -- is to wash your hands, and wash them often.

Here's how to properly wash your hands.

1. Use warm water. Wash your hands in warm running water, which will help dissolve elements, such as oils, on your skin.

2. Add soap. Apply a small amount (dime to quarter size) of liquid soap to hands. Antibacterial soaps are better but not required. And remember, premoistened cleansing towelettes do not effectively clean hands and should not take the place of hand washing.

3. Scrub for 15 seconds. Rub hands together vigorously until a soapy lather appears and continue for at least 15 seconds (about how long it takes to sing "the ABCs"). Be sure to scrub between fingers, under fingernails, and around the tops and palms of the hands.
