A sensible Thanksgiving

How many calories are in the typical Thanksgiving meal? Some sources say 3,000. Others say 7,500.

There are many ways to decrease those calories and feel better about yourself after Thanksgiving dinner.

  • Make your portions smaller than usual.
  • Try not to go for seconds.
  • Do not choose every dish that’s offered. Have some stuffing, for example, but skip the mashed potatoes. (You can have mashed potatoes any time.)
  • Choose vegetables that are not in a cream sauce.
  • Skip or limit the gravy.
  • Eat white turkey meat instead of dark.
  • If you have pie, skip the whipped cream and the crust. Just have one piece.

If you overeat during dinner, all isn’t lost. Simply get active – like go for a brisk walk – after dinner settles.

Whatever you do, don’t give up on healthy eating for the whole holiday season just because you overdid things on Thanksgiving.

Throughout the holidays, and any time of year, try to…

  • fit in at least 30 minutes of exercise a day
  • watch how much and what you eat
