Cancer is a general term for more than 100 diseases caused by uncontrolled, abnormal cell growth.
Medical oncologists are doctors who treat cancer. They prescribe chemotherapy and other anti-cancer drugs, as well as pain medicine.
Medical oncologists work with other care team members to understand each patient and treat his or her cancer. A cancer care team may include experts in radiation oncology, surgery, radiology, pathology and palliative care, as well as the primary care physician.
