Your hospital stay: Beginning your recovery

During your time in the hospital after the birth of your baby, ask for what is most important to you: rest, a chance to ask questions of the staff, and time with your baby.

'Recharge' your body

  • You'll get a chance to sleep and rest, which your body will need.
  • You'll be able to eat nutritious meals without having to prepare them yourself.

Continue your education as a parent

  • Take advantage of the opportunity to spend the first hours or days of your baby's life near professionals who can answer your questions.
  • Talk with your health care provider about the possibility of having a home care nurse visit. Within four days of your discharge, a nurse can come to your home to see how you and your baby are doing. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to ask questions in a comfortable, relaxed, one-on-one visit. This is covered by some insurance plans.

Spend time with your baby

  • You may keep your baby in your room with you and your partner, as long as there are no health problems
