Second trimester: What's happening to your body

Your breast milk is developing

Before you produce actual milk, your breasts produce a milk-like substance called colostrum. You may notice small amounts of colostrum dried on your nipples. You can rub it into your nipples; it is a natural "lotion" that helps keep your nipples soft and prevents cracking. Or, you can gently wash it away and dry your nipples thoroughly after washing.

Do not use soap on your nipples. It can dry the skin and lead to painful cracking.

You may be developing hemorrhoids and/or varicose veins

Increased hormones, increased fluid in your circulatory system, and pressure on your veins from your growing uterus can all help cause hemorrhoids and/or varicose veins.

Try these tips:

  • Avoid standing for extended periods of time, if possible.
  • Avoid restricting blood flow by crossing your legs or wearing tight knee-high stockings.
  • Change positions often.
  • Exercise your legs, doing the pelvic rock exercise (see Exercises -- pregnancy, labor, and birth), and do the Kegel exercise to improve circulation.
