Preparing for labor: When to notify your health care provider that you are in labor

Each health care provider may have a slightly different preference about how you should report your labor. One may want you to call the office any time of the day. Another may ask you to go directly to the hospital and have the hospital call when you're admitted.

Health care providers may also vary in when they want you to call. Ask "How far apart should my contractions be before I call you or go to the hospital?" Then call your health care provider as you've been instructed.

If your health care provider doesn't call you back within 30 minutes, call your hospital birth center. The birth center staff will assess you over the telephone and give you further instructions.
